History Of IFCNS

IFCNS - Indian Festivals Club of Nova Scotia

New Beginnings

Founded in 2013 by a group of enthusiastic friends, the Indian Festivals Club of Nova Scotia (IFCNS) began with a simple dream: to celebrate and honour the vibrant festivals of the Indian subcontinent in their new home of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Their very first event, the Halifax Colour Festival, was an instant success. Held at Dalhousie University, the festival brought students and community members together to throw colour, dance, and spread love and joy—a tradition that has continued to grow ever since.

Early Festival Celebrations

Encouraged by the overwhelming response to the Colour Festival, the group organized Navratri Dandiya & Garba Nights, a nine-night celebration of energetic dance and devotion. What began in small community halls quickly outgrew venue limits and today welcomes over 3,000 participants each year, making it one of the most anticipated cultural events in Nova Scotia.

Growth and Community Impact

Over the years, IFCNS has expanded its roster of festivals and events, creating inclusive spaces where culture and community come alive. Today, our annual celebrations include:

  • Rang Barse – Holi Festival
  • Flavours of India – a showcase of diverse Indian cuisines and traditions
  • Halifax Colour Festival
  • Navratri Dandiya & Garba Nights
  • Diwali Carnival (Festival of Lights)
  • Bollywood Gala

Each event reflects our mission to bridge communities through festivals.

Our Community Impact

At IFCNS, festivals are more than just events—they are moments of connection, belonging, and growth. Over the years, we’ve witnessed incredible stories of impact:

Families passing down their heritage and traditions to children born and raised in Nova Scotia.

Friendships and lifelong bonds formed through shared celebrations.

Local performers finding their stage—singers, dancers, and artists have launched their careers from IFCNS platforms.

Small businesses gaining exposure and thriving through our festival partnerships.

Collaborations with South Shore Multicultural Festival & Alderney Landing to host inclusive events that bring diverse communities together and foster cross-cultural understanding.

We are proud to see our events inspire creativity, foster inclusion, and strengthen community ties.

Celebrating a Decade of Colour

In September 2025, IFCNS marks a milestone moment—the 10th annual Halifax Colour Festival. This celebration is not only a testament to a decade of spreading unity, joy, and culture, but also to the unwavering support of our community partners, sponsors, participants, and dedicated volunteers.
